Dr. Rajendra Prasad

 



Dr. Rajendra Prasad (1884-1963) was an Indian statesman and the first President of India. He played a crucial role in the Indian independence movement and made significant contributions to the nation's political landscape.


Born on December 3, 1884, in the Siwan district of Bihar, India, Rajendra Prasad completed his education in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and earned a doctorate in law. He practiced law in the Calcutta High Court and became actively involved in the Indian National Congress, the leading organization fighting for independence from British rule.


Dr. Prasad emerged as one of the prominent leaders of the Indian National Congress and actively participated in various movements and protests against British colonial rule. He was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress in 1934, 1939, and 1947.

After India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, a Constituent Assembly was formed to draft the country's constitution. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the President of the Constituent Assembly, and he played a crucial role in shaping India's constitution. He was known for his impartiality and ability to forge consensus among the members of the assembly.


On January 26, 1950, when India officially became a republic, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the first President of India. He served as the President for two consecutive terms from 1950 to 1962. As the President, he upheld the values of the Indian Constitution, promoted national unity, and worked towards the socio-economic development of the country.


Dr. Rajendra Prasad was a respected leader known for his simplicity, integrity, and commitment to democratic principles. He played a significant role in the formative years of independent India and left a lasting impact on the nation's political and constitutional framework. He passed away on February 28, 1963, leaving behind a legacy of service and leadership.
